Plastics

Accurately detects the existence of VOCs in plastic odors!

An efficient and effective volatile organic compound detector to test and screen plastic production processes, producing lightning-fast results at parts-per-trillion sensitivity.

PLASTICS

As all chemical substances have divergent odors, plastic also has its odor which could be detrimental. The advanced technology of the zNose® helps you by:

• Quantifying the concentration of volatile organic compounds in plastic odors

• Measuring the amount of impurities in plastic

• Analyzing plastic odors in just a minute after the sample is injected in it

• Identifying the recycled plastic by its odor

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Plastic production has been rapidly increasing as it has replaced materials like wood, glass, and metal due to the convenience that it offers. It is used for packaging durable and perishable products but is hardly safe. Like all chemical substances, it has divergent odors that can be identified through its odor profile. At times it is hard to eliminate residual odors left by its contents and each recycling procedure slacks off plastic quality in a consistent manner. It also contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that create highly dangerous levels in the environment, leading to serious health risks. VOC exposure can severely affect immune system, kidneys, etc. and can even cause cancer. Immediate symptoms include respiratory problems, nausea, headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. That is why it is important to testing plastic quality in various products before it reaches consumers.

Odors from synthetic materials like plastics can produce unpleasant odors and may also contain harmful chemicals. Solvents and other plasticizers may continue to outgas long after the plastic object has been formed. Often chemicals such as toluene, benzene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, chloroform, styrene, formaldehyde, phenol, and alcohols are given off. Plasticizers (phthalates) left over in the material (did not react) after the manufacturing process outgas and produce distinctive odors as well. zNose® is an effective quality control tool to either test plastic production processes or to screen plastic parts for their presence using indices alone. It can quickly identify odor causing chemicals and help industries to take remedial steps in improving the quality of plastic materials.

zNose® has superior gas detection VOC capabilities that can easily analyze vapors from plastics at room temperature. As far as sampling vapors from plastics at higher temperature is concerned, higher vapor concentrations produced by elevating the temperature of plastic samples can be measured with greater precision than measurements taken at room temperature. During a testing procedure, a temperature of 60℃ was kept and was maintained for 10 minutes prior to sampling headspace vapors with zNose®. Using two samples, zNose® easily detected the sample responsible for the distinctive odor.
